BIOGRAPHY

Dr Duerinckx moved to Cleveland, OH in december 2006 to start work as the Chairman of Radiology at the MetroHealth System in Cleveland, OH.

Dr Duerinckx was in North Carolina from October 2004 to october 2006. He was the Director of Cardiac MR, CT and Nuclear Medicine at Forsyth Radiological Associates (FRA) and in the Department of Radiology at Forsyth Medical Center (FMC), part of Novant Health, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

From June 2000 to October 2004 Dr Duerinckx was the Chief of Radiology at the Dallas VA and Professor of Radiology and Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He is on sabbatical leave from this assignment until further notice. He also was one of the two Distinguished Scientists at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) in Washington, DC from January to June 2002.

Andre J. Duerinckx was born and raised in Belgium. He  lived in Brussels until college. He entered the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (Free University of Brussels, Flemish section) in 1969, majored in electrical engineering and graduated in 1974 with a BS-MS degree. He was very actively involved in student government. He emigrated to the USA in 1974.

He started graduate work at Stanford University (1974-79) and obtained a PhD in Electrical Engineering (dissertation on CT image artifacts) under Dr Albert Macovski. He then went on to work as a "medical imaging scientist" for two corporations. While doing this he had a leading role early on in the field of Picture Archiving and Telecommunication Systems (PACS), and helped organize the first International PACS conferences (1982-83).

He then  made a career change, and attended the University of Miami School of Medicine (1983-86). He subsequently trained as a resident in diagnostic radiology at the UCLA medical center in Los Angeles (1987-91) and as a fellow in Cardiovascular MRI at UCSF in San Francisco (1991-92).

After completing his fellowship training, he returned to the UCLA Medical center, and became a faculty member at the UCLA medical center and a staff physician at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs  (West LA VA) medical center (1992-present). He is now an Associate Professor of Radiology at UCLA and  the Chief of the Cardiovascular MR Imaging section at the West LA VA. From Nov 1996 to Aug 1998 he served as the Chair of a large PACS/Teleradiology work group for all southern California VA medical centers and clinics.

Under Dr. Duerinckx's leadership and direction the MRI clinic at the West LA VA medical center has become a world known center for innovative cardiovascular imaging research, and specifically "coronary MR angiography" and high-resolution MR angiography. Visiting fellows from all over the world spend time at this center to become familiar with these new imaging techniques.

Dr. Duerinckx also had a key management and administrative role in the Desert Pacific Healthcare Network (which groups the West LA VAMC and other VA hospitals & clinics in southern California) and helped them with  "PACS & telemedicine" issues.

Dr. Duerinckx  serves in leadership roles for many medical societies and organizations. He has organized and chaired many  international meetings and symposia. He is active in multiple international scientific societies (President of NASCI for 1999-2001; President of the Association of VA Radiologists in 2000; member of various other society committees).

Dr Duerinckx moved to Dallas, TX in June 2000 to become Chief of Radiology at the Dallas VA. The VA North Texas Healthcare System employs 19 radiologist at three imaging locations (Dallas VA, and the Bonham and Fort-Worth Clinics). We offer a first rate training facility for radiology residents from the University of Texas Southwestrn Medical Center.

Since 2002, Dr Duerinclx has also trained visting professors and fellows in Cadiac MR/CT imaging. He provides cardiovascular imaging research opportunities for students, scholars and residents/fellows from all over the world, and from any medical specialty. He continues these training programs in North Carolina, but now also offers training in Coronary CT Angiography.
